Two-step
verification, also known as two-factor authentication (2FA), is an additional
layer of security for your online accounts. It requires you to provide two
different factors to verify your identity, typically something you know (like a
password) and something you have (like a mobile device). This adds an extra
layer of protection, as even if someone has your password, they would still
need the second factor to access your account.
To set up two-step verification for
your Gmail account, follow these steps:
Sign in to your Google Account:
Go to the
Google Account Security page https://myaccount.google.com/security.
If prompted, sign in to your Google Account.
Access the 2-Step Verification
settings:
Under the
"Security" section, find the "2-Step Verification" option
and click on "Get started."
Set up your phone for 2-Step
Verification:
Choose the
phone number you want to use for verification. You can choose to receive codes
via text message or a phone call.
Enter the verification code:
Google will
send you a verification code. Enter the code to verify your phone.
Set up backup options:
Google will
prompt you to add a backup option (another phone number or backup codes) to
ensure you can access your account if you lose access to your primary method.
Review and complete the setup:
After
setting up your phone and backup options, review the information and click on
"Turn on" to enable two-step verification.
Verify the setup:
Google may
ask you to sign in again to confirm the 2-Step Verification setup.
Once
two-step verification is set up, whenever you sign in to your Gmail account on
a new device or after clearing browser cookies, you'll need to enter a
verification code sent to your phone in addition to your password.
Keep in mind
that it's essential to keep your backup options updated and secure. If you ever
lose access to your primary verification method, you can use the backup options
to regain access to your account.
